Armando's Scribe Post (Jelly Blubbers)

O.K., I've looked everywhere on this site and I can't figure out how to make a new post so I'm going to write it here and hope that Miss Nicholson sees it.

Thursday's Scribe

We didn't start off our class with Mental Math because of time retraints ( If I rememeber correctly). This is O.K. with me because im not a big fan of it. But we did get some more work to do. First we had to finish our two sheets on multiplying and adding integers. After we had finished those we were assigned another sheet on dividing integers. Later on in the class we got a blank, green piece of paper and were told to write ten random numbers between 1-100. We had no clue what it was for, but we would later find out. Then we got another sheet which Miss. Nicholson told us NOT to flip over until she said go. When Miss Nicholson said go, we flipped the page over and pictures of "Jelly Blubbers" were scattered all over the paper. We were given five seconds to study the pictures and guess what the average length, ( or width, which was debated in class) of the Jelly Blubbers was. We each then told Miss. N. what we had guessed and she tallied then on a line on the overhead. Next, we were told to measure ten random Jelly Blubbers with a ruler, and find the average of all the numbers. We each then told Miss N. what our numbers were and like before, she tallied then on a line on the overhead. Finally, we were told to find the measurements of the Jelly Blubbers which corresponded to the ten numbers we had written down at the beginning of this activity. We then found the average of those meaurements and we each told Miss. N., for a third time, what our averages were. It turned out that the best sampling method was the third one, which was completely random. After we had completed the activity, we were told to take our 3 Point Approach sheet and the other White Sheet that accompanied it. Miss. N. then had us add two more definitions. If i explain those definitions, I will end up writing double the amount of what I have already written, and I think that I have written enough.

P.S. Even though Math is my least favourite subject, you make it very enjoyable!

P.S P.S. I am going to need another invitation to this Blog because I forgot my Username.

Class Scribe: What to Write About

So... it's your turn to be the class scribe and you're not quite sure what to do. Sound about right?? Here are some scribing suggestions from a teacher I worked with last year.

Try answering these questions in your scribe post:
  1. What did we do in class today?
  2. What did we learn during these activities?
  3. Was this new information or something I've seen in math or another class before?
  4. Was the material difficult or easy to understand?
  5. Is there something that I still don't understand and could ask my classmates to explain?
  6. Did anything else happen during class that would be fun to keep a record of?

Have fun, be creative, and remember this is a public forum. What you write represents yourself, your classmates, your teacher, and your school so blog responsibly and safely.

Ms. Armstrong (and me!)

Why Blog?

I just sent off all of the invitations for you (my students) to join this blog. I've incorporated a blog in our course because I believe it will become another important tool on your "path to success." I have learned some strategies from other teachers that will help to get you started, but remember that this is YOUR space and it will only be as resourceful as YOU make it.

You can write about the topics covered in class, you can post a math question that you are struggling with, you can respond to someone else's question when you think that you can help them out, you can explore the links I've added on the right, or you can suggest some links of your own that will help you and your classmates practise the course material. We are a community of learners so have fun... and help one another.

How To Post: (Thanks Ms.Armstrong!)
  1. Go to URL www.blogger.com or click on the "I Power Blogger" icon in the right column of the page.
  2. Type in the user name and password that you provided when you accepted my invitation to blog.
  3. Click on WKC S1 Math
  4. Click on 'Create' under the 'Posting' tab.
  5. Type in your title and your post.
  6. PROOF READ your post.
  7. PROOF READ your post again. (Does it make sense? Is everything spelled correctly??)
  8. Click on the orange button that says 'Publish Post'
I look forward to seeing this develop over the semester!

The First Post

Hello and welcome! If you're in Miss Nicholson's S1 math class, you've come to the right place.

Today in class each of us completed a questionnaire that told us what our preferred learning styles are. You may have a visual preference, an aural preference, a reading/writing preference, a kinesthetic preference, or any combination of these four.

Your first blogging assignment is to:
  1. Check out the link(s) in the paragraph above that matches your preferred learning style(s).
  2. Read through the study strategies and pick one or two that you would like to try. Note: if you cannot open the kinesthetic link, try this one.
  3. Leave a comment on this post describing your learning preference and one change you will make to your study habits based on the info you learned from the link.
To leave a comment:
  1. Click on the comment link at the bottom of this post.
  2. Type in your comment in the window that opens up.
  3. When you choose an identity, select other and then remember to write your first name only so that I can verify who you are.
  4. Match the word verification and select publish.
Remember our Blogging Guidelines as you write and don't forget to bring your signed Blogging Policy to class on Monday.

If you have time, I would really recommend checking out some of the other math blogs that are linked on the right side of this page to see what a great learning space you can make this.

Have a great weekend! See you Monday!
